See a list of apps on iPhone which are currently running in the background by going to Settings > General > Background App Refresh.

If you don’t want an app to alert you or send messages when not in use, you may turn Background App Refresh off for that app. Simply go down the list and you will just need to choose a few apps that should be left to run in the background.
